- Abstract
- Some doubts have recently been expressed about the simultaneous use of sprinklers and ventiltion for smoke control and fire suppression. Factory Mutual Research Corporation (FMRC, USA), expressed the view that smoke vents should not generally be fitted to sprinkler controlled buildings because they can adversely affect the sprinkler operation, and may be detrimental by increasing the fire spread and burning intensity. Consequently a recommendation amendment to the Handbook of Industiral Loss Prevention. These conclusions have been widely criticized, most recently by Heselden with specific reference to industrial buildings.
