Abstract
Detailed temperature and species profiles in a heavily sooting and a rich but non-sooting premixed ethylene flame have been studied with probes, laser-induced fluorescence, and a chemical kinetics model. We found that the oxidation reactions leading to CO, H20 and CO2 can be well modeled. The hydrocarbon pyrolysis chemistry of the C1 to C4 compounds is reasonably well-known but gaps remain. The model does a fair job in reproducing experimentally determined H and OH profile shapes. Hydrocarbon chemistry early in the reaction zone plays an important part in determining which species are present in the soot particle inception zone.
