Abstract
For a number years, the Center for Fire Research (CFR) at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) has been studying the ignition and growth of fires and the subsequent spread of smoke and toxic gases in buildings. In the past two years, significant progress has been made in our ability to predict mathematically the environment which results from a fire in multiple compartment structures. The predications are obtained by solving the relevant physical equations with numerical model. While the methodologies have been developed primarily for civilian structures, few changes are required to apply them to naval ships. Changes of importance include substitution of the algorithms for stairways and elevators by those for hatches, scuttles and ladders.
