- Abstract
- The first U. S. National Standard for the Surface Flammability of Carpets and Rugs, DOC FF 1-70, is based on an ease of ignition test--"the pill test". In January 1970 a serious corridor type fire in a Marietta, Ohio nursing home confirmed an already anticipated need for another type of test, one which would measure how floor coverings burn when exposed to a larger fire. Of the several test method development projects initiated in response to this need, the Flooring Radiant Panel Test was the one selected by NBS for standardization.
