- Abstract
- Cross-linking of polymers, under thermal conditions, appears to offer the opportunity to improve the thermal resistance of polymers. For a polymer like polystyrene, the only funcitonal group with which one may work with is the aromatic ring andFriedel-Crfts chemistry appears to offer the opportunity to achieve cross-linking. The talk will review previous work which has used conventional catalysts, such as aluminum chloride, at room temperature, conditions which are obviously unsuitable for flame retardancy ad then show how one may improve on this by utilizing inefficient catalysts and inactive alkylating agents in order to render some fraction of the polymer non-volatile.
