- Abstract
- Experiments are described in which the standard timber fire developed at the Forest Products Research Laboratory, and similar fires of smaller linear dimensions were allowed to burn freely. Measurements were made which enabled the rates of heat loss from the fires by radiation and convection to be calculated. In addition, the weight of fuel was continuously recorded and at intervals photographs of the fires were taken. Suggestions are made to account for the discrepancies in the heat balances, the errors being ascribed to the incomplete combustion of the fuel and to the loss of convected heat to the surrounding structure. The experimental results are then analysed and the laws governing their dependence upon the scale deduced. The analysis also furnished a very clear picture of the various stages in the combustion of a wooden structure.
