- Four years ago, the annual production rate for smoke detectors in the U.S. was around a half-million units per year. By the end of 1977, as far as we have been able to determine, the annual rate of production has reached some 10 million units per year. It is estimated that by the end of 1977 somewhere around 30 million of these detectors had been installed in single-family homes, apartments and mobile homes in the U. S.
