- Abstract
- Thermite compositions are finding constantly greater application in practice (metallurgy, welding, etc.)/1 - 3/. The high thermal stability of the systems creates definite difficulties for a kinetic investigation, and the absence of volatile reaction products makes unacceptable the usual method of investigating the kinetics of the decomposition of condensed substances on the basis of weight loss or gas release. In connection with this, great interest is afforded by investigations of the phenomenon of self-ignition in thermite compositions, which permit the effective kinetic parameters determining the stages of the process to be found by a comparatively simple method. Let us note that thermite compositions, because of the absence of gas release during the reaction, can serve as a good theoretical model for the investigation of a thermal explosion and the ignition of condensed substances.
