Abstract
Eighty percent of the fire deaths in the United States are attributed to the inhalation of smoke and toxic gases and are not due to burns. At the National Bureau of Standards, the toxicity of single and multiple fire gases is being studied to determine whether the toxic effects of a material's combustion products can be explained by the interactions of the major fire gases or if minor, more obscure gases need to be considered.
