Abstract
A diffusion flame spreading over a thermally-thin solid fuel in quiescent and slowly moving atmospheres is studied in microgravity. The flame behavior is observed to be strongly dependent on the magnitude of the relevant velocity between the flame and the atmosphere. Using microgravity experimental results and previously published data in forced and elevated gravity buoyancy-induced convection, the flame spread behavior is examined over a wide range of relative velocities. Trends in flame spread rate are determined and mechanisms for flame spread extinction are discussed.
