- In this incredible centrry of technological progress, electricity is servant, not master. We've come to accept technology and change, not fear it. We take safety for granted because so much is safe. One hundred years ago, inspired electrical inspector William Henry Merrill set up a small laboratory in Chicago to test electrical devices. In the next 100 years, Underwriters Laboratories would go on to rigorously test virtually every successful consumer product and many industrial products - more than 12,500 types of products around the world that carry the famous UL Mark.
