Abstract
Research conducted by the Construction Industry Institute has indicated that properly designed materials management systems can produce significant savings in construction project costs. To achieve these cost savings, some type of computer controls are usually required. Materials management computer controls, or computer systems, must be structured such that they combine and integrate the functions of material takeoff, requisitioning, purchasing, expediting, warehousing, and material issue to the crafts. The purpose of this Tutorial is to demonstrate the characteristics most commonly found in sophisticated, full scale, mainframe, minicomputer and microcomputer materials management computer systems. The Tutorial is a functioning on-line system that manages both bulk materials and engineered equipment. The exercises in this Manual were designed for the purpose of educating project management, materials management, purchasing, data processing, and craft personnel. The Tutorial will hopefully stimulate discussions between this diverse group of potential system users so that they can effectively develop or modify their own computer systems. The Tutorial consists of a set of menu driven integrated program modules weitten in dBASE III Plus (a product of Ashton Tate) and compiled with the Foxbase+ compiler (a product of Fox Software, Inc.)
