Abstract
This is the Executive Summary of the Fifth edition, it presents an analysis and overview of the national fire problem for 1982, and selected trends for 1978-1982. The report also presents selected state results for 1982, in the appendix detailing the findings of the National Community Volunteer Fire Prevention Program (NCVFPP) ten state study. The first Fire in the United States, published in 1978, established a baseline of data against which progress could be measured. The second, third and fourth editions continued in the spirit of their predecesor to more accurately depict the Nation's fire problem.
