Abstract
This publication is the result of complete review and revision of information published in the December 1964 edition of Fire Resistance Ratings published by the American Insurance Association, and for which April 1968, March 1970 and August 1972 Amendments were issued. The revisions incorporated into this publication are in three principal areas: 1) Details of Construction, 2) Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Designs, and 3) New Data. There is no intent to issue partial amendments to this publication as was done for the previous edition. The revised content and apparent dearth of recent generic fire resistance testing are viewed as minimizing the need for frequent amendments or revisions. However, those desiring to propose revisions or provide new or additional data are encouraged to do so. This publication presents information concerning the construction of building assemblies (beam, column, floor-ceiling, roof-ceiling, and wall and partition assemblies) which provide fire resistance ratings of up to 4 hours; it is intended for use by building inspectors, other public officials, architects, engineers and others interested in fire safety in buildings. The information is provided in terms of minimum requirements to achieve the specified fire resistance rating and is in such a form as to be useful in establishing conformance with building code provisions or determining applicable ratings for existing assemblies.
