- Abstract
- This report is the result of a preliminary study concerning various aspects of fire risks within oil tank storage areas and adequate handling- and storage places. The purpose has been to obtain a basis for directions and priorities of future research within the area. Items that have been studied are: rules for handling and storage of flammable liquids, rules for design of fire extinguishing systems, experience from real fires, fire statistics, changes in the facilitier concerning operating crew, handling and type of products. The possibilities to calculate the radiation impact from a fire has also been studied. The study shows that the fire prevention generally must be considered as very good, which is indicated by the absence of serious fires in Sweden. However, further projects are proposed in the following areas: Calculation of heat radiation levels and impact on the environment and extinguishing personel in different fire situations; Design, planning and performance of the extinguishing of larger tank and bund fires; Design and installation of fire protection systems for gas tanks; Design and installation of fire protection systems for loading ramps.
