Abstract
Simultaneous measurements of the size and temperature of single pulverized fuel particles have been used to determine the overall burning rates of lignite particles flowing in hot gas environments characteristic of those which prevail in present-day pulverized fuel combustors. Measurements indicate that the lignite particles are highly reactive and burn in the Zone III burning regime, i.e. at the diffusion-controlled limit in gas environments having fome one- to six-mole percent oxygen in the temperature range 1400 to 1550 K. In Zone III, the overall particle burning rate is controlled by the transport of oxygen across the thin film about the particle. Reaction takes place at or near the external surface of the particle and the particle diameter progressively decreases with burnoff.
