Abstract
The fire load study undertaken by the National Bureau of Standards as the major part of a contract between GSA and Building Research Advisory Board of the National Academy of Sciences is not the first fire load study ever conducted and will probably not be the last. We feel, however, it is so unique and broadly encompassing that it should not be compared to the traditional determining of the total calorific mass. We think that the study and the data it is developing will provide a data base of both breadth of type of data and depth of coverage that has not previously been experienced in fire protection, will fill a large number of important information gaps, and will impact on many fire protection determinations.
