- Abstract
- This injuries and deaths due to fire have long been a source of concern. A recent review of the problem indicates that the ignition of clothing is involved in about 150,000 burn injuries each year, and that of the 8,700 deaths from fire and explosion occurring yearly about 4,000 involve the ignition of clothing. Moreover, clothing ignition generally increases the severity of a burn injury. Severe burn injuries are expensive and difficult to treat and leave psychological as well as physical scars. In an effort to curtail the large numbers of fabric burn injuries, the Federal Government passed the Flammable Fabrics Act in 1953.
