- Abstract
- The Navy needs a fire resistant hydraulic fluid for submarine service. A water-based fluid containing phosphorylated polyethylene as a thickener and bis-hydroxymethylphosphinate as a pour depressant was developed in a previous contract. This fluid meets most reuirements but is deficient in the following ways: It is thermally unstable, foams excessively, and permits vapor-phase corrosion. Moreover, the dried fluid is an adhesive. The present contract is aimed at studying the prepartion and properties of the fluid's components and adjusting the formulation to eliminate the shortcomings.
