- Abstract
- NFPA estimates that U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 3,900 reported hotel and motel structure fires per year during the four-year-period of 2002-2005. These fires caused an estimated average of 11 civilian deaths, 144 civilian injuries, and $64 million in direct property damage per year. On average, one of every 12 hotels or motels reported a structure fire. Most were minor. Cooking equipment was the leading cause of hotel and motel structure fires. The largest share of casualties occurred in fires that started in bedrooms. These estimates are based on data from the U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA's) National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA's) annual fire department experience survey.
