Abstract
Literally from our earliest childhood we are familiar with the idea of keeping an ear open for the baby next door with the help of an intercom or babyphone. It meant that the neighbors could have an undisturbed evening out occasionally. These days there are thousands of other "objects" to be kept under surveillance, ranging from the heating plant to the intrusion detection system, from the lift to the refrigerators or freezers, from the pub and its oe-armed bandits to the warehouse and the computer system. These things usually operate automatically, and here too, we only expect to hear something form them if something out of the ordinary happens.
