- Abstract
- This document has been prepared for local fire chiefs in order to provide them with a basic understanding of the upcoming smallpox vaccination program and its impact on their fire department. It is not intended to be a substitute for the detailed policy and medical guidance developed by the federal government and the state and local health departments charged with actual implementation of the program. All actions taken by the fire department as a result of the implementation of the smallpox vaccination program should be done at the direction of and in close cooperation with the public health officials charged with implementing the program. Protocols and guidelines for smallpox vaccination will evolve and change over time. This guide is based on the most current information available at the time of publication. The recommendations contained in this guide are based upon the medical and policy guidance provided by federal authorities including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). This document has been reviewed by legal counsel and medical professionals. However, fire departments should consult with public health and legal officials at the local level regarding their specific vaccination program. This guide is only intended to serve as an educational tool for the local fire chief.
