- Abstract
- The gradual increase in intentional fires lead for the past two decades to the development of various identification techniques in the field of accelerators in fire residues; such techniques have been improved along the years, so that at present it is possible to detect intentionality in said losses, with a high degree of sensibility and reliability. The purpose of the different analysis techniques is obviously the simple qualitative identification of some compounds, the presence of which in the residues can indicate the existence of some type of accelerator in the particular accident. Nowadays, the analyst has available a wide spectrum of analytical methods, the application of which will basically depend upon the following: 1) required sensibility; 2) representativity; 3) available time; and 4) available equipments and economic resources. Starting from bioliographic data, it is inferred that the most sensible method is the one serving as basis to the dynamic concentraion of the volatile elements of the sample and their injection into a coupled system of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The required equipment is rather expensive.
