Abstract
A social-psychological and environmental framework for a theory of privacy is summarized. The framework focuses on the management of information the loss of which would or could have costly consequences for the target of the information. Key concepts, such as information, communication, personal control, cost, and barrier, are defined and discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on influence of the objective physical environment or privacy.
