- Abstract
- On May 10, 1993, a major fire occurred at the Kader Industrial (Thailand) Co. Ltd. factory located in the Nakhon Pathom Province of Thailand. To date, 188 factory workers have died in this fire, although this number may increase because of the large number of workers who received serious injuries. This disaster now stands as the world's worst loss-of-life accidental industrial building fire in recent history. For eighty-two years this dubious distinction was held by the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that killed 146 workers in New York City. Despite the years that have elasped between these two disaster, there is a variety of striking similarities. This is the third major accidental work place fire that the NFPA has investigated in recent months. Once again, this fire illustrates the importance of adhering to fundamental fire protection principles in building design and in the operation of industrial occupancies. The NFPA has cooperated with the International labor Organization (ILO, a specialized agency of the United Nations) and with the Bangkok Police Fire Brigade in documenting this fire.
