Abstract
In March 1966 some solar furnace studies were carried out by the U.S. Army at their Natick laboratories, to test Canadian Nimbus cloth as the outer layer of clothing for thermal protection. These preliminary tests were described in a note, dated May 6, 1966, by Dr. S.J. Kennedy. In each of these tests Nimbus cloth was used as the outer layer of an assembly of three layers of material in contact with one another and with an animal. One second exposures were given to various levels of irradiance in the Natick solar furnace, and the degree of protection afforded to the animal was judged by the proportion of 2+ and 3+ burns received behind each ensemble. The results indicated that Nimous cloth did not provide the expected protection. In fact the report states: We find that at 25 cal/cm2/sec none of the uniforms utilizing Nimbus as an outer layer provided significant protection.
