Abstract
[Abstract in English] During the late eighties, the use of steel in frameworks increased a great deal. The increase use leads, not only to a development for steel structures, but also to new solutions and new more rational building methods. This evolution has created a great need for both directions and advice in designing and producing. Publication No. 127, is one part of the handbook, Fire Engineering of Steel Structures, and explains standards and regulations concerning fire and fire protection for designers as well as contractors. Fire and Steel After a short introduction, the conditions and the development of fire are described. The lapse of fire, in general and in different types of buildings, fire spread and functions of different kind of fire protection measures are also explained. A description of steel reaction to fire and how the structures will be protected are given. Examples of fire separating elements are also given. Standards and Regulations In one chapter all the directions and technical words in standards and regulations will be explained. The different standards of testing and classification materials and elements are described. Different partners have different directions on fire safety and fire protection. The publication will give a picture of the partners and their directions. Swedish Regulations for New Buildings The regulations, which in general control fire protection of steel structures are the regulations given by "Boverket". In the publication, the regulations for fire protection are introduced in a schematic way. In some very lucid examples the regulations and their effect on the design are demonstrated. One part describes how different kind of protections are working, i.e., fire ventilations, fire alarms, fire insulations and sprinkler systems. References to the regulations are given. Handbook Publication no. 127, General Part, represents together with Design Industrial and Large Span Buildings, the Institute's publication no. 125, about twenty details of constructions and brochures from most of the Swedish firms, manufacturers and resellers of fire insulation material, the first edition of the handbook, Fire Engineering of Steel Structures. The handbook will later be complied with the two publications Dimension, Design Dwelling and Office Buildings and more details of constructions.
