Abstract
The purpose of the present work is to standardize the technical requirements to be met by gear to protect the wearer against the certain death entailed in prolonged immersion in cold water, as well as the tests that need to be made on such equipment at the time of certification. These specifications have been drawn up in view of the numerous projects being carried out abroad and in France, particularly at the Bretigny Flight Test Center's Laboratory of Aerospace Medicine, on hypothermia and human tolerance to immersion. They lead us to propose to potential users gear that is simple, relatively compact and easy to store. Its heat insulation, buoyancy, water-tightness and resistance to fire should be readily ascertained by use of the certification tests we propose.
