Abstract
In recent years, great strides have been made in the development of models of ignition and flame spread over solid fuels. A large amount of the most recent work has been performed at or supported by the National Bureau of Standards (now National Instituted of Standards and Technology). Within this program, it appears that polymethylmethacrylate and cellulose have been frequently selected for study, both as "model substances" and because they are commercially important in thedir own right. One material (PMMA) represents the ideal of a "vaporizing" solid, the other cellulose, a charring solid.
