Abstract
This investigation forms the initial stages of research into the chemical aspects of combustion in bushfires, which has as its final aims (1) an elucidation of the combustion process at a molecular level and (2) the mechanisms by which this combustion process can be chemically inhibited. In this work the pyrolysis of the materials constituting a typical eucalpyt forest litter bed has been studied under conditions simulating those that exist during a bushfire.
