Abstract
Chem-tronics has developed a closed-cell polyimide foam which meets the material property specifications for use as submarine hull insulation. Two configurations have been developed include: l) Chem-lon 503 foam with a Navy approved decorative and functional top coat; and 2) Chem-lon 503 foam faced with a ceramic fiber glass cloth. The Chem-lon 503 was characterized in Phase 1 of this program and further improved and optimized to meet the new requirements of this phase of the program. The most difficult property to meet was the water vapor transmission. To meet this critical property we have developed a new sealant composition which can be applied by cost effect processes and produces a water vapor impermeable and fire resistant coating. This sealant was designed as a primer or undercoat for the decorative/functional top coat paint for the exterior surface of the insulating material. An imporvement of this system has also been developed which utilizes a ceramic fiber glass cloth as the exterior surface of the foam insulating material. This facing provides a water vapor impermeable, thermally stable and abrasion resistant surface for the foam insulting material. This facing can be easily painted, however, only a few mils of this paint are required because in this case the paint serves only as a decorative finish.
