Abstract
Maintainability is defined as "an inherent characteristic of a system or product design pertaining to the ease, accuracy, safety and economy in the performance of maintenance action; a design parameter related to the ability to maintain." Full implementation of design for maintainability will improve project return on investment. This book, produced by the CII Design for Maintainability Research Team, will assist owners by providing specific instructions on using tools for improved design for maintainability. It will help designers and contractors by illustrating methods of integrating maintainability knowledge into project design and construction. The following steps are suggested: 1. Become familiar with the levels of maintainability, 2. Perform a self-assessment of the current status of your own project or company, 3. Compare current project or company procedures for maintainability with the best practices, 4. Compare procedures to the model process, 5. Use appropriate tools to improve.
