Abstract
Across the country every year an estimated 6,000 children under the age of six are seriously injured when their sleepwear catches on fire. Many of these injuries and deaths can be avoided - if the sleeping garments children are wearing do not burn. The Federal Flammable Fabrics Act (P.L. 90-189) was passed in 1953 in response to a rash of serious burn incidents in 1945 from highly flammable boys' cowboy playsuits and in 1951 from "torch sweaters." The act's purpose is to protect the public from highly flammable wearing apparel by regulating the sale of such goods.
