Abstract
ONLY ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH In connection with the harmonized fire technological assessment of building material in the EC, smoke density is being measured in the newly developed SBI (Single Burning Item) apparatus in order to obtain a classification. The test simulates a fire ignition and development phase. The size of the samples and their construction comparable to real life allow reliable statements to be made on their behaviour in fire conditions during these fire phases. The smoke potential of selected material is determined by different experiments during which the conditions of disintegration are varied. Smoke release reacts sensitively to a variation in the parameter, whereby it cannot be assumed that a higher thermal irifluence will necessarily cause an increase in smoke density. This point is being considered in the present assessment of A2 building material by simulating a smouldering fire and a test with open flames. The unique SBI test does not, however, ensure that a volatile changing smoke release can occur in adjoining fire conditions. In particular, the smoke density in a smouldering fire and in a very early phase of the fire is not being determined which can lead to considerable uncertainty in the product assessment.
