Abstract
A multiyear program has been successfully conducted to develop a fire retardant, nonemissive, general purpose paint for application to interior surfaces of submarines while underway. A general purpose paint has been formulated from a fire retardant polyvinylidene chloride resin. This paint meets all criteria for the nonemissive program. Nonemissive additives were identified to protect the paint from bacterial attack while in the can and to prevent mildew growth once the paint is applied to the ship. Other additives were found to prevent flash rusting of steel surfaces when the paint is applied under humid conditions. Nonemissive thickeners are added to obtain the theological properties needed for good brushing. A proposed military specification has been prepared describing this paint. Manufacturing and use instructions have also been prepared. During the last year of the program a green tint base has been developed that can be blended with the general purpose paint to obtain a pastel green color.
