- Abstract
- Fire has been a problem throughout history and will continue to be. In enclosed areas, carbon monoxide is the primary casualty producer while thermal injuries are the primary casualty producers in open areas. The flame hazard overlaps these different threats. There is a lack of consensus between government, industry, and insurance on defintion of flame terms and their meanings. Additionally for the military community, no stated requirement exists for flame protection to be provided by the ground soldier's combat uniform. Therefore, a front end analysis was conducted to examine flame and incendiary hazards to the soldier and to determine if changes to clothing and individual equipment are needed to better protect the soldier. Tentage and other Natick-related systems were reviewed as they relate to flame and incendiary hazards. As a result of this analysis, it is recommended that Natick work with the user community and industry to develop flame requirements and improve flame testing.
