- Abstract
- Of the 500 combinations of upholstery components that have been tested according to the International method ISO 8191:1 with smoldering cigarette, 91% were approved, meaning they were not ignited by a smoldering cigarette. This could well indicate that the construction of the combinations used for the tests have been made in accordance with the instructions published in various connections during the last years. The upholstery covers consisted of: cellulose (cotton, viscose, linen composition of these) 25% wool and compositions of wool and cellulose 8% synthetic fibers and its mixture with others 48% leather 15% bonded fabrics 3% other cover materials 1% Polyester wool and cotton fabrics were the most common of the tested interliners. The most frequent upholstery materials were conventional and high resilient PU-foam. Also down/feather and its mixture with other materials occurred. The number of non-approved combinaitons were 44, and thest included cover materials as follows: cellulose, cotton, etc. 27 (21% of tested cellulose fabrics) synthetic/cellulose 11 (5% of tested synthetic/ cellulose fabrics) leather 6 (8% of tested leather covers) The results indicate that it could be a hazard to use certain leather materials, certain cellulose fabrics as well as certain synthetic/cellulose fabrics (the latter if the cellulose content is high). The cause of this hazard is that the cover material show a predisposition to ignite and burn through smoldering. The results point to the necessity of finding a way of sorting out fabrics and leather that incline to smoldering combustion. In the tables shown in this report the test results are given in brief.
