- Abstract
- The Navy is evaluating a phosphaene base (PN) hydraulic fluid candidate as a potential replacement for the fire resistant hydraulic fluid currently operating aircraft carrier elevator systems. New purification procedures have improved the acid number and demulsibility deficiencies identified in the PN fluids during the initial stags of method development. Thirty gallons of the cyclotriphosphazene, P3N3 (OC6H5) 1.25 (OC6H4-m-CH3) 0.87 (OC6H4-p-CH3) 0.38 (OCH2CT3) 3.5, has been prepared in a pilot plant with good reproducibility of physical properties. This sample, formulated with 100 ppm tolyltriazole, was forwarded to the Center and is under test and evaluation. A preliminary manufacturing cost estimate for the PN fluid based on two million lb/year production is $10.63 lb.
