Abstract
Prof. Thomas will be presenting an overview of recent work completed on the CESARE-RISK model. Currently the model assesses the risk to life safety in residential apartments, hotels, and aged care facilities. This has been done in parallel with analysis of statistical data on fires in buildings in Australia and the US, mainly for shopping centres and residential buildings. The analysis has included human behaviour studies conducted at CESARE and fatality investigation by the Australian Coroners offices, which investigate all accidental deaths. The results of the modeling and statistical analysis has indicated that statistical data from fire safety sub-systems (such as smoke detectors) should be re-considered in light of human effects, such as their presence at or near a fire ignition.
