- Abstract
- From 1979 to 1980, the number of fires involving solid-fueled auxiliary heating equipment in one- and two-family dwellings rose by two-thirds. This dramatic jump produced an increase in the total number of fires in one- and two-family dwellings, despite decreases in the number of fires due to other causes. In 1983, fires involving all types of auxiliary heating equipment killed nearly 700 people and caused nearly $500 million in direct property damage.
