- Abstract
- [ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH] The report contains a review of the present situation regarding fire safety requirements and test methods for ships. The IMO tests for reaction to fire are reviewed. The principles of using functionally based requirements instead of prescriptive rules as in SOLAS are discussed. Ongoining fire research of importance for the development in the marine area is discussed. Ongoining fire research of importance for the development in the marine area is discussed. Especially the CBUF-programme on upholstered furniture, initiated by the European Commission, and the EUREFIC-programme on surface linings initiated by the Nordic countries are disucssed. They both use the Cone Calorimeter and the Room/Corner Test as a basis for determining fire properties. The importance of these two tests for future developments are therefore pointed out. IMO is considering them for qualifying materials for ships intended to carry passengers and vehicles at high speeds, so called high speed craft. Finally proposals on various important research projects are listed.
