Abstract
In the Nordic countries NT FIRE 004 is used for classifying the reaction-to-fire properties of building products. It is an old test method that will be replaced in a few years time. One of the best candidates for a new test method is the Cone Calorimeter, ISO 5660. Therefore, Nordtest has sponsored this investigtion where the fire properties are measured by NT FIRE 004 and ISO 5660 on more than 150 products. ISO 5660 measures several parameters separately while NT FIRE 004 measures one parameter, the temperature, that is a combination of ignition, heat release rate and total heat properties. It is not possible to predict the exact behavior in NT FIRE 004 with results from ISO 5660 only. But for many products a statement whether the product has a good chance to pass a test or not can be made. Criteria used for that purpose can e.g. be ignition time, average heat release rate -q60, or total heat released. For more exact evaluation a more complex model needs to be applied. Two of these models, the SP model and the Heat release rate and Ignition Indices model have been tested. Both the models were able to predict if a product is class I or class III with good accuracy.
