Abstract
The design of load-bearing structures under the effect of fire is connected with standard fire resistance tests. These tests have given valuable information. However, for certain structural applications these tests have been replaced by computation methods for the analytical determination of the load-bearing capacity of structures when exposed to fire. Many countries are now permitting classification of load-bearing steel elements under the effect of fire. This has resulted in European recommendations for the design of steel structure exposed to the standard fire by the fire committee of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS).
