- Abstract
- Margaret Law joined Arup in 1974. In her early years with us, I had the great privilege of working closely with her. It was often a surprise but always a pleasure. There are two great monuments to Margarets lifetime achievement. The first is the body of her published work; the second is the worldwide consultancy practice of Arup Fire, now some 90 strong, in 15 offices. Less tangible, but no less significant, is the influence she has had on the development of fire safety engineering and its application to numerous building projects. In this book we are republishing 29 of Margarets most significant articles. They represent work that she did over the full span of her career from the 1950s through to the end of the century. They cover the periods when she was an active researcher at the Fire Research Station, Borehamwood in the UK, and a researcher/consultant with Arup Research & Development. It is a unique collection. We were lucky to persuade Margaret to join Arup at a key stage in her career. With a background in physics, she had established herself as one of the countrys leading fire scientists. For Margaret, it was a great opportunity to become involved with the application of fire engineering on actual construction projects, whilst continuing to develop the fundamentals of the field. Being able to develop ideas through a sequence of projects, for example in airport terminals, gives an added dimension to research, which is of immense value. Having them robustly challenged by the approval authorities at every stage, ensured that a rigorous approach would be maintained.
