Abstract
Char formation during combustion of polymers can be an effective flame retardant mechanism. This can be accomplished in a number of different ways including: 1. Addition of phosphates to promote charring of oxygen-containing polymers. 2. Modification of polymer structure. 3. Use of catalysts to change the mode of degradation, and 4. Incorporation of intumescent agents into the polymer. Each of these methods will be discussed. A video demonstration of cone calorimeter studies will demonstrate char formation. The polymers discussed will be polypropylene, modified PPO, polycarbonates, polycarbonate/ABS blend and impact polystyrene.
