Abstract
This paper is addressed particularly to concrete designers and civil and structural engineers. It reviews historical changes in the properties of ordinary Portland cements and considers the effects of these on concrete. The changes, mainly an increase in the C3S/C2S rato, have resulted in significant increases in strength. Codes of Practice have increased permissible stresses in line with these increases in cement strength, enabling design for higher strengths at earlier ages. However, the increased strength of cements could lead to less cement being used in designed mixes, and this might adversely affect durability. It is important therefore that specifications make allowance for the changes to obviate any adverse effects on durability.
