Abstract
The COMPACT forest fire simulator for training firefighters in the classroom is now available. Developed by Beltsville Electronics Center, the device was designed to suplement the large permanently installed simulators and mobile units now in use. The COMPACT simulator can be hauled in a station wagon or shipped to field units and can be set up in a small clasroom. The training staff playing various roles - dispatcher, lead plane pilot, etc. - sits on one side of a rear projection screen and presents various fire situations to trainees sitting on the opposite side of the screen. Fire conditions are created by palcing artwork, transparencies, and overlays on four overheat projectors. Sound effects and typical fire communications equipment add to the realism.
