Abstract
Internationally, the generally accepted method for the design of load bearing structural elements under fire action is based on a classification system, comprising two main components: (1) a fire exposure according to ISO 834, with a required time of fire duration t(fd) stipulated in building regulations and codes for the structural application in question--usually expressed in multiples of 30 minutes, and (2) a standard fire resistance test according to ISO 834 by which the fire resistance time t(fr) of the structural element in question is determined experimentally--usually classified in multiples of 30 minutes.
