Abstract
An experimental study was conducted of fire growth to flashover, using a reduced-scale model of a compartment. The purposes of this investigation, funded as a part of the program of research conducted by the Products Research Committee, were to (1) select a rational, deterministic definition of flashover as an end point to the dynamic processes of fire growth, and (2) develop a generalized correlation of test data (including available full-scale data as well as results of these model experiments) that could aid in the prediction of conditions necessary for flashover occurrence and the rate of fire growth to the flashover state. The objective of this project was to develop a generally applicable empirical correlation of material properties, enclosure geometry, and fire characteristics, including ventilation conditions so as to predict flashover behavior in an enclosure.
