Abstract
Soot volume fraction (fv) measurements are central to studies of soot growth and radiant transport processes within flames. In the post-flame region, soot yield and specific extinction coefficient per unit mass of fuel consumed in addition to fv are key quantities of interest. Light extinction is widely used for measuring these quantities but possesses limitations. Interpretation of extinction measurements to determine fv or soot yields rely on assumptions and uncertainities regarding soot properties. Varying experimental conditions can affect the contributions to the extinction measurement of absorption by PAH's and scattering, hence these contributions are often neglected.
